Task- Opinion about mass media
It’s said that a picture is worth a thousand words, but we are going to explain their meaning later just in case.
The mass media is an important thing in our lives, whether we like it or not, due to its influence on the people. In our case, we don’t like it, and the main reason is that it is unreliable.
We don't know how the mass media were in the past, but now we feel that we are at a point where it is almost impossible to know what is true and what is false. We see that it writes a lot of articles with no evidence or biassed evidence to give a certain message that it can’t be given with all the evidence available. To counter this, Twitter can be a good resource, as we saw during the last years thanks to the new ‘journalists’ who will talk later of, or normal people who share things there with their phones.
Neither helps the fact that they change the narrative in function of the government needs, like Winston of ‘1984’ did when he worked in the Ministry of Truth. One example can be that we lived with masks in 2020. At the beginning, masks weren’t effective to face COVID-19 because there weren't sufficient numbers of them in the population, but when this lack was solved, the masks started to be very effective against the virus and mandatory to us. During this time, people informed us that the government gave more than one hundred million euros to the mass media through subsidies and institutional advertising. Proof of it can be the front page of many different newspapers with the government stamp that we can see in the image of this entry. Now is the time to prepare citizens to accept amnesty, whether they want or not, and the media has been doing this since September. The next few months, who knows.
We have the theory that the media was always similar in this aspect, but now it's becoming more and more obvious and this is a little scary. Luckily, we have more resources to investigate and discover things, so now they have more difficulties to manipulate the present and, consequently, more difficulties to manipulate people's minds.
As a result of this, the number of people who don't believe in mass media is increasing rapidly and we can't say when this will stop, if it stops someday. This creates the opportunity of doing the same function as a journalist, but without the need of having the corresponding degree, and of course, there are ‘journalists’ who are better than the official journalist. Sadly, the journalist certificate isn't worth anything these days.
We don’t know how the mass media will be in the future, but we don’t hope the situation will change soon. They are very dependent on the government, especially economically, which makes us pessimistic when we think about this field.
